Is Covid-19 Covered By Your Insurance? – MoneySmart Philippines Guide 2020

Aside from following our country’s strict Enhanced Community Quarantine measures, having the protection of a life or health insurance will help in easing your worries. It’s good to know that you have financial back-up if ever you get sick during this health crisis.

Learn about your insurance coverage and what to do in case you contract Covid-19. Here’s a list of insurance companies that provide Covid-19 coverage.

FWD Covid-19 Ready

Existing customers with active and eligible life insurance plans will receive additional lump sum if they are diagnosed with Covid-19.

The medical benefit of 100,000 PHP will be paid upon diagnosis of Covid-19, and the funeral benefit of 50,000 PHP will be paid upon death due to Covid-19.

The insured will only be paid once.

To be eligible for FWD Covid-19 Ready, your life insurance plan must be issued up to February 29, 2020. It must be in force upon Covid-19 diagnosis or when you become a Covid-19 PUI (Person Under Investigation).

This special coverage period is from March 9, 2020 until April 15, 2020.

Manulife Additional Hospitalization Benefit

Customers who are diagnosed with Covid-19 from March 23 to June 30, 2020 will receive additional benefits from Manulife at no extra costs.

However, to be able to file a claim, you should have qualified policies or riders that were issued up until March 15, 2020.

If you have Hospitalization Benefit coverage, you will be getting an additional hospitalization benefit of 1,500 PHP per day up to 10 days of hospitalization.

If you have Critical Illness coverage, you will receive a one-time Diagnosis Benefit of 10,000 PHP if you are diagnosed with Covid-19.

Should you need to file a claim, these are the documents required:

  • Medical Certificate
  • Medical Records (including all copies of tests conducted, admission date, surgeries, etc.)
  • Your bank details
  • Accomplished Claimant’s Statement

Furthermore, Manulife is extending its payment period to 60 days from their due date. This will apply to customers whose due dates fall between March 16, 2020 to April 30, 2020.

Free Covid-19 Protection from Pru Life UK

Pru Life UK is offering free Covid-19 Protection and Personal Accident coverage and death benefit for 500,00 Filipinos.

This offer is available through Pru Life UK’s health and wellness app called Pulse.

It’s one-time 45-day insurance coverage for the first 500,000 customers who will register on the Pulse app starting April 13, 2020.

The insured must be 18 to 64 years old to be eligible for this limited-time and exclusive offer.

A death benefit of 100,000 PHP will be paid if the insured passes away due to an accident or to Covid-19 (terms and conditions apply).

A double Covid-19 death benefit worth 200,000 PHP will be given to eligible health workers without having to purchase additional insurance products.

For customers who will be hospitalized because of Covid-19, an additional 1,000 PHP as daily hospital income benefit will be provided. This applies to life insurance policies with the Hospital Income Rider. The policy should be in force and must be issued on or before January 31, 2020.

You can make a claim if you have been admitted to hospital for at least 12 hours and for a maximum of 10 days, beginning February 20 until April 20, 2020.

Pru Life UK has also extended its grace period to 60 days from the standard 31 days. This applies to due dates between February 16, 2020 to June 30, 2020.

AXA

Customers of AXA will be paid out according to the provisions stated in their policy contracts whether it’s Covid-19 related or not.

Policyholders of Global Health Access will also be covered for Covid-19 related medical treatments and hospitalization until June 30, 2020.

Life insurance policyholders can also avail of free access to 24/7 teleconsultation services via the MyPocketDoctor app. You can avail of this service until April 30, 2020 and use it until May 15, 2020.

Allianz PNB Life

Allianz PNB Life is offering an extended grace period of up to 75 days for policyholders diagnosed with Covid-19.

The claims procedure is also simplified with an Express Lane for policyholders who are affected by Covid-19.

Cocolife

Grace period for premium payments for life insurance policies have been extended for another 30 days. This covers due dates that fall on March 1, 2020 to April 12, 2020.

If you have the Hospitalization Benefit Plus Rider or the Hospitalization Benefit Rider in your policy, you will get the daily hospital income benefit if hospitalized because of Covid-19.

Sun Life

Policyholders who have riders such as Hospital Income Benefit, Sun First Aid, Sun First Aid Plus may avail of the daily hospitalization benefit if diagnosed and hospitalized because of Covid-19.

If you suffer from a covered critical illness brought on by Covid-19, your claim will also be prioritized.

Beneficiaries of the insured may also file for a death benefit claim if the insured passes away because of Covid-19 or any of its complications. However, the insured must have an eligible Sun Life insurance plan.

Sun Life will also accept soft copies or digital copies when making an insurance claim during Enhanced Community Quarantine to make the process easier and more convenient.

Maxicare

Medical care that will be required relating to Covid-19, as well as confirmatory tests will be covered. This is subject to the eligibility and benefits of your Maxicare healthcare program.

Pacific Cross

Pacific Cross Philippines is also superseding the standard exclusion on pandemics and is covering Covid-19 cases. But in an official statement on their Facebook page, the company said that they also reserve the right to limit coverage and/ or impose exclusions any time.

Generali has issued a statement that it will continue to provide protection for all illnesses that are covered, including Covid-19. Customers can reach them at their customer hotlines for further information.

Philhealth

Philippine Health Insurance Corp. has released a new case rate package for patients who will be afflicted with Covid-19 and will be hospitalized starting April 15, 2020.

Under this new package, there will be four categories for Covid-19 patients, depending on the severity of the condition.

  • Mild pneumonia – 43,997 PHP
  • Moderate pneumonia – 143,267 PHP
  • Severe pneumonia – 333,519 PHP
  • Critical pneumonia – 786,384 PHP

Philhealth will also pay for Covid-19 testing done in non-hospital facilities (labs, drive thrus etc.) as long as they are RITM accredited.
